Manchester City received a big blow in the FA Cup as they faced Manchester United in their home turf the Etihad Stadium and lost 3-2.
Wayne Rooney has been underperforming the last couple of weeks in the Premier League but the England striker was first to break the deadlock and score for Manchester United when he managed find the net through a header following a cross of Antonio Valencia.
Things only got worse for Manchester City when their captain Vincent Kompany received a red card after he tackled Luis Nani with both his legs and the referee decided to send the defender off the pitch leaving City with 10 men on the pitch.
The numerical advantage was being evidenced as United had more space on the pitch and even more when Danny Welbeck turned the match 2-0 with an impressive volley that went past the goalkeeper Pantilimon.
United found the net for the 3rd time and everything was starting to look like a trashing for the visitors with control of the ball and the absence of Kompany being felt. It was Rooney who scored the 3rd for United having just 5 minutes remaining on the 1rst half, the England forward was picked to take the penalty strike that later got blocked by Pantilimon but he did allow a rebound for Rooney to nod it at the back of the net.
Kolarov maintained the hopes of City alive when he scored through a free kick at the 48th minute and only a few minutes later Alex Ferguson decided to place in Paul Scholes who made a terrible mistake when his first touch of the ball allowed Milner to steal the ball and later crossing it to Sergio Aguero who made no mistake in scoring.
This result gives United their ticket to the 4th round of the FA Cup with a tight a difficult victory against the current champions Manchester City
