Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisboa was the scenario of battle between Sporting Lisbon and Manchester City as they faced each other in the Europa League and the hosts picked up a surprising victory over the London based club.
Sporting Lisbon fired the opening shots against Joe Hart of City with Daniel Carrico finding his teammate Van Wolfswinkel in the penalty box with his long passes but Hart doing well in interfering and tapping the ball away from danger. Manchester City suffered from a big hit when Vincent Kompany was sent off the pitch with an injury.
Manchester City later created lots of goal scoring chances with a number of shots against the opposition’s back line and goalkeeper but Lisbon stayed firm.
2nd half saw Lisbon taking the lead in their hands with a surprising early goal through Xandao after Joe Hart dipped the ball away after a free kick was whipped in by Matias Fernandez and giving it away to Xandao who snatched a victory with a back heel goal.
Roberto Mancini placed all of his attackers into the pitch as Balotelli came into the game replacing the ineffective Dzeko and the Argentine Aguero coming close on scoring at the last few minutes of the encounter but they just couldn’t pull it off and Lisbon won by the bare minimum.
