The most anticipated match of this weekend was scheduled for Sunday morning as the current champions faced off against Spain in a game that did not disappoint; it was filled with drama and controversial moments until it came to an end with both sides adding 1 point for their standings in Group C.
From the moment the squads got settled into their formation a lot of doubts where being raised concerning the decision of Vicente Del Bosque as he placed Fabregas into the position where Fernando Torres was supposed to play and therefore Spain was kicking off the Euro with no natural strikers but instead a 4-3-3 with Iniesta, Silva and Fabregas being their most offensive players.
On the other hand Prandelli opted to go with a 3-5-2 and putting Daniele De Rossi into the defense and playing him as a ‘’Libero’’.
Coming to no surprise it was Spain who began taking warning shots into the goalpost of Buffon but not causing much danger in the early stages. Italy’s wall was denying all the attempts of Spain to get a goal who were getting closer and closer into the box of Buffon.
On the 13th minute Italy was gifted with a free kick just around the box of Spain and Andrea Pirlo striked it just into the right hand side of Iker Casillas who did a good job in deflecting the ball away from his goal. Some minutes later Antonio Casssano chipped the ball into the penalty box of Spain with the unmarked Claudio Marchisio waiting and volleying it straight to the hands of Iker Casillas.
Iniesta and Silva were pulling out all the strings for Spain but Buffon dealt well against their shots and attempts throughout the entire match.
The opening goal finally arrived at the 61st minute when Andrea Pirlo majestically lifted the ball over to the substitute Antonio Di Natale who came in for Balotelli and within a few minutes of his arrival he managed to control the inch perfect pass of Pirlo and slip it into the opposite corner of Iker Casillas.
Italy’s joy only lasted 3 minutes as Fabregas was able to beat Buffon for the 1rst time in the game as he received a slick pass from Silva and later tipped it past the likes of the Italian goalkeeper. Torres was later introduced into the game but he made any impact at all as all of his chances to score where either blocked by Buffon or just missed as the match ended 1-1.
