Olympic 2012 Men’s Football- Spain Vs Honduras 0-1 – Spain Crashing Out Of The Olympics

Spain have been knocked out of the Olympics following their 2nd consecutive defeat this time as they faced Honduras and got surprised when Bengtson headed the ball past the goalkeeper of Manchester United De Gea in the 1rst half. They failed to equalizer the encounter and now are disqualified from this year’s Olympic Games with a disappointing all round performance.

Honduras did not waste in finding the goal that would give them the lead and under the 10 minute mark they successfully staked their claim when Roger Espinoza sent a cross into the penalty area of Spain and Bengtson made no mistake in heading it past the hands of De Gea who failed to react in time.

From there on out the Spanish side gave it their all trying to level the playing field and leaving themselves vulnerable at the back but they needed to that if they wanted to find that much needed equalizer. Juan Mata had the best chance of the entire encounter when Montoya crossed the ball to Chelsea’s playmaker and he tried to slip it into the net with a volley but it just went wide away from the post.

2nd half picked off and Honduras came close on scoring following a cross of Martinez and a volleyed shot of Espinoza but it was only later blocked by the opposition. Spain responded with header of Adrian but would only later see his effort deflecting off the crossbar and Mata was at the right time at the right place as the ball fell on his area and the winger tried to poke it into the net but Johnny Leveron cleared it away from danger.

At this point Spain was playing brilliantly with some nice passes and crosses but it just wasn’t their day as they failed to make the finishing touches needed in order to score their desired goal. The substitute Rodrigo later slammed the crossbar making it the 3rd time for Spain as they struggled on scoring the goal. Honduras was able to hold with their lead and receive all 3 points from this match but more importantly is knocking Spain out of the competition.
